Thermal mapping refers to a process of checking equipment to ensure that it is working at the required temperature, pressure and humidity. The test conducted takes all of these things into account in order to produce a thermal map of the equipment including areas that are too hot, too cold or an areas of pressure that is too high.

This is essential to ensure that equipment is in full working order and can also prevent problems later in the construction process. The actual test should be run more than once each time, it should be run first when the equipment is empty and then a second time when it is full. In general thermal mapping is used on equipment such as incubators, storage areas, warehouses, stability chambers, and dry heat sterilizers among other things.
Why is Thermal Mapping Important?
The temperature of different spaces can vary widely. Even within the same overall environment the difference in temperature between two pieces of equipment can be as much 10 degrees. Therefore for any business or organisation that works with temperature sensitive products, thermal mapping is of high importance to the continued success of the business.
How important is the Accuracy of the Thermal Map?
The accuracy of the thermal map is utmost importance. The hardware used to perform the test should be calibrated before use in order to ensure the accuracy of the sensors and also of the data acquisition hardware. Once it has been calibrated, the measuring equipment will be setup within the equipment that needs to be mapped. Once the measuring equipment has conducted the analysis and recovered the necessary data, a final calibration will be performed in order to ensure that the results are as accurate as they can possible be. As well as, to account for outliers and uncontrollable variables it is suggested that the process of thermal mapping should be conducted two times. If the results from both tests are relatively similar then an average can be taken, but if the variation is large then a third test should be conducted. Once the mapping process has been completed, it should be clear to see where any areas of worry are on the equipment itself. Following this, it is possible to use monitoring equipment so that business owners are able to keep track of the temperature variations within their equipment and quickly address any problems.
